Taguchi method based optimization of cutting tool flank wear during turning of PR-Al/20vol.% SiC-MMC

Abstract: In this study, Taguchi method, a powerful tool in the design of experiments is used to optimise the cutting parameters for cutting tool flank wear during turning of PR-Al/20%Vol.SiC-MMC using specially designed uncoated carbide tools. An orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise ratio, the analysis of variance and 'F' test are employed to investigate the cutting characteristics and to determine the significant factors for cutting tool flank wear. The influences of the cutting parameters and their interactions on the flank wears are analysed through various graphical representations. Taking significant cutting parameters into consideration and using multiple linear regression mathematical model for cutting tool flank wear is developed. The adequacy of the developed mathematical model was checked with the help of observed cumulative frequency plot and various residual plots. Confirmation test results also established the fact that the developed mathematical model is appropriate for representing the cutting tool flank wear effectively during turning of Al/SiC-MMC.
