Abstract: Prediction of chip-breaking in machining is an important task for automated manufacturing. There are chip-breaking limits in machining chip-breaking charts, which determine the chip-breaking range in terms of cutting parameters. This paper presents a study of the effect of 3D groove insert parameters on chip formation and breaking. Based on the chip-breaking criteria, an improved formulation of the critical feed rate is constructed through the analysis of up-curl chip formation with 3D chip breaking grooves.
