Editorial: Where did IT go?

Abstract: After years of debate about the role of information technology (IT) in the enterprise, the parties finally, though inadvertently, reached agreement. While everyone was debating about the role IT should play in the age of digital transformation, IT quietly left the building, changed its name and reinvented itself. IT's new residence includes its new, extended family, its selection of technologies before requirements, its reliance upon cloud delivery, a new image, a redefined relationship with 'big' software, 'democratisation', some new leadership skills, shared awareness and always-on capabilities. IT departments - where everyone went to get something fixed - have been transformed; some have even disappeared. Now what?
