Multi-objective robust optimisation for crashworthiness during side impact

Abstract: This paper presents a non-linear response surface-based multiobjective crashworthiness optimisation for side impact and follows up with multi-objective robust optimisation for the same problem. The genetic algorithm-based multi-objective optimisation technique treats multiple objective functions separately without combining them in any form. Two different robustness quantification strategies based on mean-effective value and additional robustness constraints have been proposed. This methodology is applied to the vehicle crashworthiness design optimisation for side impact under safety constraints with structural weight and front door velocity under side impact as objectives. It shows that the vehicle weight can be reduced significantly from the baseline design and at the same time reduce the door velocity. The obtained pareto front brings out useful inferences about optimal design regions. CAE simulation is used to validate optimal results.
