Tribological performance of hemp fibre reinforced phenolic composites: a brake pad material

Abstract: Three unique syntheses were developed and investigated. One with just hemp as reinforcing fibre (HFRC), the other with hemp and basalt fibres (HBFRC), and the third with hemp and aluminium strands (HAFRC) as reinforcing fibres; alongside phenol-formaldehyde and different fillers comprising the framework was created. Compressed moulded specimens were sliced to standard sizes. Physio-mechanical and tribological characterisation was done. Taguchi strategy was utilised to plan the trial preliminaries of the tribo-test. Enhanced factor levels were then concluded from S/N proportions and afterward approved. ANOVA was performed for choosing the commitment of components for the outcomes. It revealed that the type of composition had a greater influence on the result variations. Specimen with the only hemp as reinforcement component (HFRC) exhibited better physio-mechanical properties along with lower specific wear rate (1.5368 × 10-5 mm3/Nm) and coefficient of friction (0.336) at optimum conditions than HBFRC and HAFRC. Microstructures were analysed using scanning electron microscopy.
