On process analysis and optimisation of Nd: YAG laser cutting characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy using RSM and NSGA-II

Abstract: In recent years, titanium alloys has find diversified applications in aerospace, manufacturing and processing industries due to its unique characteristics. Ti alloys are difficult to cut by conventional machining techniques due to their uneven temperature distribution and high tool wear rate. The present study investigates the influence of major pulsed Nd: YAG laser process variables (i.e., pulse width, pulse energy, cutting speed, and gas pressure) on different performance measures [kerf deviation (KD) and metal removal rate (MRR)] during cutting of Ti-6Al-4V superalloy sheet. The experiments are designed and carried out based on RSM based Box-Behnken statistical design and the adequacy of developed mathematical model was analysed through ANOVA technique. Then, the optimal settings of operating conditions were predicted using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The microstructures of laser cut surfaces were investigated and correlated using scanning electron microscope (SEM).
