Experimental study and simulation of surface generation during machining of K-80 alumina ceramic in modified abrasive jet machining with different temperatures using Al2O3 abrasives

Abstract: This research work concerns with machining of K-80 alumina ceramic through fluidised bed-hot abrasive jet machining (FB-HAJMing) with different using Al2O3 abrasive temperatures. The FB-HAJMing has the potential to machine such smart and high strength materials. Experimental studies are assessed to execute the influence of process constraints on four major performance variables i.e., material removal rate, depth of cut, over-cut and displacement. Thirty-one sets of longitudinal micro-grooving trials based on central composite's design of experiments (CCDOEs) are implemented. Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is employed in order to progress the mathematical relationships between the influencing machining factors and the response characteristics. Moreover, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is performed to analyse the nature of the produced workpiece. Additionally, the condition of micro-holes is analysed through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) which reveals a negligible embedment of abrasive particles into the workpiece surface due to high abrasive temperature.
