Combined control strategies for performance enhancement of a wind energy conversion system based PMSG

Abstract: In this paper, an analysis of wind farm system (WFS) based on permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) under sliding mode control (SMC) and vector control approach (VCA) gives the basis for combining outstanding features of the two control strategies into a reliable and efficient control system to provide enhanced WFS performance. The system contains two PMSGs connected to a common dc-bus system through rectifiers. The dc-bus is connected to the power grid through five-level neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converter (5LNPC-VSC). The main objective of this control is to regulate the velocities of the PMSGs with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for the complete functioning regions of a wind turbine system. The proposed control techniques are based on sliding mode approach (SMA) and vector control (VC) to achieve the MPPT, to keep the dc link voltage constant and to control active and reactive powers. The stability of the regulators is obtained using Lyapunov analysis. The simulation results in Matlab/Simulink are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed combined control strategies.
