Particulate matter emission prediction of Beijing's Fengtai district through the box model application and statistical analysis of spatial layout grid

Abstract: The box model technique was applied to analyse the regional air quality distribution of Beijing's Fengtai district. Using the IDW interpolation and spatial grid statistical method the spatial representation of PM emission of different regions surrounding different air monitoring stations was deduced using GIS to help suggest priority regions for monitoring station installations. The results revealed that the main source of PM10 emission in the region was the industrial and commercial areas, both exhibiting values higher that the annual PM10 concentration standard (50 μg/m3). The spatial analysis also revealed that the total PM10 concentration frequency variation exceeded standard in regions around Fengtaihuayuan monitoring station making it a priority region for monitoring station installation. With this analysis proving to be highly significant in optimising several PM10 monitoring layouts, the described approach represents a useful tool for regional administrations to plan and apply air pollution reduction goals in a region.
