Non-cognitive constructs measurement model development based on the theory of planned behaviour in the context of the academic performance of engineering students

Abstract: This study is an application of 'theory of planned behaviour' (Ajzen, 1991; Ajzen and Driver, 1992; Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975) which is an extension of the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975). As in the original theory of reasoned action, a vital factor in the theory of planned behaviour is the individual's intention to perform a given behaviour. In this paper, it is in the context of the educational process. This confirmatory analysis is a factor analysis that is designed to predict and explain how student intention determines a student's performance in academic achievements. The researchers are proposing a model based on structural equation modelling (SEM) with six non-cognitive traits simultaneously. The model is to establish causal inferences between these traits with academic performance over a period of four years in the context of engineering studies. The scope and focus of this paper are to develop and validate the measurement model as a prerequisite towards model development based on the theory of planned behaviour.
