Probing into the genetic factors responsible for bladder cancer prognosis

Abstract: MicroRNAs are small non coding RNAs that can act as oncogenic suppressors and activators. Our in-silico study aims to identify the key miRNAs and their associated mRNA targets involved in bladder cancer progression. A total of seven differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were found to be common between gene expression omnibus (GEO) datasets and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The most significant DEM and its targets were validated using TCGA patient dataset. Pathway enrichment analysis and Protein - Protein network generation were done for the chosen mRNAs. Kaplan Meier survival plots were drawn for the miRNA and mRNAs. A significant down regulation of EIF3J and an up regulation of LYPLA1 were associated with poor prognosis in BLCA patients and hence EIF3J is suggested as a potential drug target. To conclude, hsa-miR-138-5p may act as a promising prognostic and a diagnostic bio marker for bladder cancer. Further experimental studies are required to support our results.
