Abstract: The main aim of this present research work is to evaluate the variables that can affect the flexibility of FMS in the Indian manufacturing industry by exploring the cause-effect relationships among them using DEMATEL 'decision making trial and evaluation laboratory' approach. Fifteen variables that have an impact on the flexibility of FMS pertaining to the Indian manufacturing industry have been explored through considerable review of existing literature and viewpoints of the experts from the industry and academia. DEMATEL approach has been used to evaluate the interrelationships among these variables and to explore the areas of improvements in the FMS processes by observing the casual diagram. The cause-effect diagram will assist the decision makers in conceptualising the FMS as system approach and managers in manufacturing industry can further prioritise the variables affecting flexibility in FMS by analysing the degree of interrelationships among them as their comprehensive impact on the system.
