Abstract: Smart grids are enabling technologies for the functioning of electrical grids and the country's economy. In smart grid networks, managing energy efficiency is an upcoming challenge. The energy is consumed by appliances in the residential sector, even during peak times. It results in wastage of energy up to some extent. Demand-side management (DSM) is a primary concept in the emerging smart grid. Thus, DSM balances vitality utilisation every day utilising various procedures, as it influences every customer's unit cost. This survey highlights different types of DSM and briefs about different approaches of DSM in the residential area. The individual approach of DSM may use a load scheduling algorithm, it can be optimised technique or load shifting algorithm to achieve reduced electricity cost and optimal electricity energy consumption. The advantages of each approach are specified using energy parameters like energy cost, peak load, peak to average ratio, research gap is highlighted with delay, user comfortability.
