Assessment and prediction of mechanical strength of jute fibre reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

Abstract: A colossal amount of construction and demolished waste are generated daily due to rapid urbanisation and construction works. To manage this, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) might draw a sustainable opportunity. Besides, natural fibre can improve the strength and ductility in concrete. This study investigates the mechanical strength of RAC with jute fibre, by replacing the natural aggregate. Mix proportions of 1:1.5:3 and 1:2:4; water-cement ratios (W/C) of 0.4, 0.45, 0.5 and 0.55 and jute percentages of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% (weight of cement) having 10 mm length were used to inspect 28 days' compressive and splitting tensile strength of jute fibre reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (JFRRAC). Mix proportion of 1:1.5:3, 0.45 W/C and 1% jute show maximum 19.30 MPa and 2.48 MPa of compressive and splitting tensile strength which satisfies natural aggregate concrete. Moreover, equations were developed by multivariable linear regression analysis to predict the strength of JFRRAC.
