Abstract: This study focuses on the evaluation of the mean fission lifetime. We have used the dynamic equations of motion that contain the active forces (Coulomb + surface + rotational energies) and the nuclear viscosity. We suggest a new formalism to evaluate the mean deformation moment at the scission point. We have calculated the mean fission lifetime for the 220Th nucleus formed in the reaction 40Ar + 180Hf at Elab = 180, 190, 216 and 249 MeV. The one-body dissipation coefficient and the reduced friction β = 40 × 1021 s-1 are used to reproduce a variety of experimental results. The values obtained range from 5.82 × 10-20 s to 14 × 10-20 s.
