Abstract: The manufacturing industry, traditionally anchored in material resources, now faces the challenge to integrate knowledge-related activities to leverage development and foster jobs, wealth and economic growth. This study used extensive literature review, a qualitative study in manufacturing companies in Caxias do Sul (Brazil), and a Delphi consultation with experts from 12 countries to create a conceptual framework for knowledge-based development (KBD) in the manufacturing industry. The study revealed that knowledge markets nowadays require organisations to shift from a price-led competition to an attribute-led competition to foster better results through the implementation of knowledge assets in their value proposition. The framework generated is a guideline for repositioning the value system of the manufacturing industry in a knowledge-based universe.
