International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management (IJMTM), Vol. 10, No. 1, 2007

Abstract: In this preliminary study, we carry out field case studies of three upcoming retail chains in India. All the three are working on identifying the possibility of switching to Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) from bar code in the coming future. Through structured and unstructured interviews and visits to some of their retail outlets in Central and Western India, we collect information on their operations practices in the areas related to vendor management, inventory management, layout, Information Technology (IT) backbone and quality management. We attempt to understand how RFID application will impact their operations and supply chains. We also try to analyse the cultural and organisational challenges for implementation of such technology in the Indian context. We also identify significant adoption and implementation barriers and find out where the three retail chains stand in this framework. Finally, we suggest directions for future research.
