An experimental investigation of fabrication mechanisms of optic fibre end faces using nano/microindentation and nanogrinding

Abstract: This paper reports an experimental investigation of fabrication mechanisms of optic fibre end faces consisting of glass fibre and zirconia ferrule. Nano/microindentation was employed to investigate the deformation mechanisms of fibre and ferrule materials when grinding simultaneously. The critical loads for brittle-to-ductile transition were measured and the critical depths of cut for nanogrinding were computed based on the indentation results. The effects of the nanogrinding conditions on surface integrity of the ground end faces were studied. The process for fabricating optic fibre end faces was developed to obtain nanometric surface quality.
