Application of Shainin® Component Search™ approach as root cause analysis tool for drop in two-wheeler fuel economy

Abstract: The fuel economy of continuous variable transmission (CVT) scooters drops about 15% of claimed value in city driving conditions. The present study deals with the finding of root causes for drop in fuel economy of CVT driven scooters. An attempt has been made for resolution of the problem using Shainin® methodology with Component Search tool. 110 cc scooters were selected for the comparison of best of the best (BOB) assembly and worst of the worst (WOW) assembly. After the systematic elimination process, clutch friction liner, rubber belt, and CVT fly masses have been found as contributing components to the root problem for drop in fuel economy. The findings have been validated through capping run and factorial analysis. Contribution of significant components and interactions has been derived using analysis of variance (ANOVA).
