The management of healthcare technology from a national perspective

Abstract: The field of healthcare technology assessment (HCTA) has been developed as a response to serious concerns about technology, including the question of value for money. During the 20 years of formal existence of the field of HCTA, those working in the field have concentrated on assisting formal policy-making, especially at the national level. A number of countries, especially in Europe, can point to significant successes in such activities. However, formal policies are strictly limited in the degree to which they can affect technology adoption and use. This points out the need for activities that affect the clinical and administrative levels, through such activities as dissemination of HCTA information. Healthcare technology assessment also needs to become more closely related to those involved in technology management in healthcare organisations.
