Abstract: A combined process coupling photocatalysis and biological treatment was investigated for the removal of tetracycline (TC). The experiments were carried out in a reactor operating in batch mode with internal UV irradiation. PC500 was used in tetracycline degradation at different initial pollutant concentrations. The degradation process is efficient at low concentrations and the kinetic degradation of TC in the presence of PC500 exhibited pseudo second order kinetics. The pH of the solutions had no effect on the photocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic. The optimal values of the UV intensity radiation and the PC500 concentrations were 25 W.m−2 and 1 g.L−1, respectively. The biodegradability study of the photocatalysed TC solutions based on the evaluation of BOD5, COD, TOC, BOD5/COD ratio and AOS showed a biodegradability of the obtained by-products for initial TC concentrations in the range 20 to 60 mg.L−1. Therefore, the coupling of photocatalysis and biological treatment is possible.
