A real-time power-split strategy for a hybrid marine power plant using MPC

Abstract: In this work, the problem of energy management strategies in hybrid diesel-electric marine propulsion systems is investigated with the implementation of model predictive control (MPC). The system behaviour is described by models based on system identification from experimental data. These models were used for the design of predictive controllers. The controllers were designed to tackle physical and operating constraints of the hybrid system. Different MPC designs were considered, in order to evaluate the capabilities of the proposed control concept. The controllers were successfully tested at the test bed of the laboratory evaluating diverse strategies for disturbance rejection, system stability, and operation of the plant within operator's desirable limits.
