Applying REECHD to non-uniformly distributed heterogeneous devices

Abstract: Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) include nodes with different initial energy, different transmission rate and hardware. Clustering is an energy-efficient approach to collect data in a WSN. Clustering partitions the WSN nodes into clusters. Each cluster has a cluster head (CH) that gathers data from its member nodes and forwards them to a base station. Rotating Energy Efficient Clustering for Heterogeneous Devices (REECHD) is our novel clustering algorithm which introduces the concept of intra-traffic limit rate (ITLR). This defines a limit on the intra-traffic communication that all WSN clusters must comply with. In this paper we apply REECHD to a WSN where devices are not uniformly distributed. We show how the use of ITLR improves energy efficiency by adaptively generating a different amount of clusters in different WSN subareas. Our results show that REECHD enhances on average the network lifespan when compared to the state-of-art protocols.
