Harnessing demographical differences in life satisfaction: Indian manufacturing sector

Abstract: With the advent of research on employee demographics, organisational researchers have re-illuminated the importance of life satisfaction in working adults. With this precept in mind, the purpose of the present study is to test the demographically-based perceptions of life satisfaction. The data were collected through the survey method from 404 full-time employees working in the manufacturing sector organisations in India and analysed with the help of the T-test and ANOVA technique. The results showed that perception of life satisfaction in employees significantly differ according to age, gender, education and income level. Further, the results revealed that male employees perceive higher life satisfaction than female employees and elderly employees perceive more life satisfaction than younger and middle aged employees. Also, more educated an employee is higher the perception of life satisfaction. Furthermore, the perceptions of life satisfaction increases with higher income level. These findings attempt to provide the HR professionals and practitioners with some knowledge that how the employees perceive their life satisfaction based on demographics and posit a more sensitive attitude towards employee's life satisfaction. The study also highlights that due attention should be given to demographical diversity while transfiguring human resource practices in the organisations.
