Managing medical technology: hospitals and innovation in the biomedical industry in Australia

Abstract: This chapter uses a small study of firms in the biomedical industry in Australia to suggest how recent trends in the management of hospitals may adversely affect the innovation potential of the biomedical sectoral innovation system. Set within broader analyses of industry development which emphasise the importance of effective linkages between firms and other organisations such as hospitals, the empirical work built on international research emphasising user-producer relations as the key to innovation in the biomedical device industry to show the critical personal links between medical specialists and local device manufacturers and the narrowness of the channels along which information flows.
