The relationship between emotional intelligence of school principals in managing change and deputy principal change beliefs

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between principal change leadership emotional intelligence (PCLEI) and deputy principal change beliefs (DPCB). A total of 760 questionnaires were completed by deputy principals from Malaysian national day secondary school (NDSS), fully residential secondary school (FRSS) and national religious secondary school (NRSS). The finding revealed that there was a positive correlation between PCLEI and DPCB across NDSS, FRSS and NRSS. This supported a re-conceptualisation of school leadership whereby the rational models of leadership should be complemented by emotional management in today's leadership terrain. The study also found that different organisational culture of NDSS, FRSS and NRSS contributed differently to the above phenomenon. As PCLEI was a contributor to and an outcome of school culture, school principals need to be sensitive to the challenges which emerge from the organisational culture and proactively influence to shape the culture that best benefits the organisation.
