A Web-based physician's telemedicine system for a new age

Abstract: The use of off-the-shelf software in Web technology and its application to clinical applications is reviewed. Descriptions of prototype systems at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre, University of Minnesota Hospital, the Children's Hospital, Boston, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic and Tripler Army Medical Centre, Hawaii are given and development experience reviewed. It is argued that the use of standard protocols for displaying information and the capabilities of multiplatform users simplifies the development of medical information systems. Clinical applications involving institution-specific legacy systems are potentially costly and can be unproductive given the existence of readily available desktop systems elsewhere.
