Abstract: This review provides the preparation and reactions of poly(ethylene terephthalate) PET towards different reagents. Also, the synthesis of terepthalic acid from decomposition of poly (ethylene terephthalate) PET, the condensation of terephthalic acid with nitrogen nucleophiles afford several heterocyclic compounds. Furthermore, the treatment of terephthalic acid with SOCl2 affords terephthaloyl chloride, which reacts with hydrazide derivatives to give benzamide compounds used in azodyes or liquid crystal. Moreover, the reaction of PET or terephthalate ester derivatives by reaction with NH2NH2 to afford the terephthalic dihydrazide. The latter compound demonstrate various heterocyclic compounds which anticipated industrial applications (dye cotton fabric, fibres, food backage, liquid crystalline polymeric systems and biological activities).
