Abstract: This study investigates the effect of sliding speed and applied normal load on the wear and frictional behaviour of pure and coated (single layer titanium carbo nitride (TiCN), bilayer titanium aluminium nitride/tungsten carbide/carbide (TiAlN/WC-C), multilayer (TiCN/TiAlN/WC-C)) tool inserts. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using pin-on-disc tribometer. Higher hardness (25.83 GPa) and lower surface roughness (0.219 μm) are the main reasons for augmented performance of multi-layered tool in tribo tests. The result showed that multilayer coated tool depicts 217.67% improvement in wear resistance compared to uncoated tool under low load, while running at lower sliding speed. The same experiences nominal wear at higher sliding speed and showed 248.57% enhancement in wear resistance than uncoated tool. The average coefficient of friction for multi-layered tool under 15 N load portrays lower average coefficient of friction in the range of 0.47 compared to uncoated tool (0.53).
