Determinants of water utilisation for small-scale irrigation among rural households in Southern Ethiopia

Abstract: This study was conducted in Abaya district West Guji Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. The main concern of this study was to identify major factors affecting utilisation of small scale irrigation water. Primary data was collected through sample respondent interview, focus group discussions and key informants' interviews. Through multistage sampling techniques three Kebeles were selected purposively and sampled household were stratified as user and non-user of small-scale irrigation water. Then 120 sample respondents were randomly taken from each stratum by using probability proportional to size. Both descriptive statistics and binary logit model were used in this study. Age of household heads and distance from the market were negatively and significantly affect utilisation of small-scale irrigation water. While, education, access to improved technology and access to credit service were positively and significantly related with utilisation of small-scale irrigation water.
