Summary
In this paper, we discuss the meaning of Intellectual Capital (IC) in the sustainable value creation process. After examining the concept of Intellectual Capital Reporting (ICR), we introduce our notion of IC Development which focuses on long-term strategic objectives. Both are illustrated by a case study of a mid sized German enterprise in the knowledge intensive service sector. Of special emphasis is the question, how SMEs and regions can collaborate on the systematic development of IC as the central resource for global sustainable development. Finally, we raise some issues deserving further research regarding the long-term development of IC.
