  Abstract/
Summary
This paper presents the results of an end to end performance evaluation of broadband wireless access systems in mobile fading channels. A model of an OFDM system that has been proposed for broadband wireless access in the context of the IEEE 802.16e group is used to study the performance of the up-link functionality when the user mobility varies from the pedestrian speed of 3 km/hr up to vehicular speeds of 150 km/hr. The effect of mobile fading is modeled after the UMTS Channel A. In order to mitigate the effects of the broadband fading channel, a concatenated FEC scheme comprising of an RS block code and a Convolutional code is employed in the baseband system. An equalizer is used in the receiver to compensate for the channel effects using a Least-Squares channel estimator. Bit Error Rate (BER) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) analyses are done for QPSK and 16-QAM modulations with different coding rates and for mobile channels operating in the above vehicular environments.
