2000-2001 economic crisis and the financial performance of domestic and foreign companies in Turkey

Abstract: A number of economic crises experienced after the 1990's in Turkey, have not only affected the macroeconomic structure, but also the financial performance of companies operating in Turkey. These economic crises brought about many financial risks as sales declined, collection period of receivables inclined, the borrowing rates increased sharply and the cost of capital increased significantly. Domestic and foreign companies are expected to be different in terms the exposure of risks caused by the changing economic parameters. This article compares the financial performance of domestic and foreign companies operating in the cement and the food industries in Turkey before and after the 2000-2001 economic crises by utilising various financial ratios. In this study; domestic and foreign companies were found to be statistically different before the crises, whereas they were found to be similar after the crisis.
