Multiple regression analysis (MRA) in modelling milling of glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP)
by J. Paulo Davim, Pedro Reis
International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management (IJMTM), Vol. 6, No. 1/2, 2004
Abstract: Milling composite materials is a rather complex task owing to its heterogeneity, to the fact that reinforcements are extremely abrasive and fundamentally by the problems that appear during the machining process. With the purpose of understanding and reducing these problems, this paper presents a study that evaluates the cutting parameters (cutting velocity and feed rate) and the type of matrix under the machining force in workpiece, surface finish and surface delamination in GFRP composite materials. A plan of experiments was established considering milling with prefixed cutting parameters in two hand lay-up GFRP composite materials (Viapal VUP 9731 and ATLAC 382-05). The objective was to establish a model using multiple regression analysis between cutting velocity and feed rate with the machining force in workpiece (Fw), maximum peak-to-valley height (Rt) and delamination factor (Fd) in the GFRP composite materials. Finally, confirmation tests were performed to make a comparison with the foreseen results from the mentioned model.
