With the popularity of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo Answer, etc.), some sort of on-the-fly experience is learned and obtained by daily users. This type of experience can be recognised as a particular way to cultivate domain knowledge. One typical instance is solution-finding. People rather search for the web to see if someone meets same, or similar, issues that he/she is dealing with and comes up with the solutions rather than find a solution in a traditional way (e.g., via a book). This not only reveals that the problems are about to be solved but also that the process involves knowledge being discovered based upon experiences from the public.

The phenomenon of social networking has changed the behaviours of human beings. Compared with traditional knowledge discovery and management, this special issue concentrates more on the approach to gaining understanding of knowledge-related applications, systems, services, etc., through the quantitative and/or mathematical models from the social world. We call for novel solutions, studies and experiences regarding challenges and opportunities in the scope of knowledge engineering and social computing for upcoming era.
