Special issue on: "Recent Advances in the Design of Drivetrains and Geared Systems"

Guest Editors:
Professor Patrick Kelly, Ford-Werke GmbH, Germany
Professor Athanassios Mihailidis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Dr Stephanos Theodossiades, Loughborough University, UK

Modern industrial needs include increased output power-to-weight ratio, refinement of mechanical and parasitic losses, robustness and improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) behaviour. All the elements of drivetrains are being continuously improved to meet the above requirements, whilst new materials and designs are being introduced by engineers. Geared systems transferring torque are also playing a major role in the design of drivetrains.

This Special Issue aims to communicate to colleagues in industry and academe recent advances in the design of the above systems. The objective is to inform the community about methods, analysis, design advances and new materials that contribute to the performance improvement of drivetrains and geared systems. The subsequent benefits are longer product/component life, less energy consumption, reduction in the product development time and economy.

Subject Coverage
The topics of interest include, but are not limited, to the following aspects of machine elements involved in power transmission, drivelines, clutches, gearboxes, differentials etc.:
  • Design, analysis, simulation
  • Load carrying capacity, lifetime and wear
  • Dynamics, vibration and noise
  • Materials, heat treatment and coatings
  • Tribology and lubrication
