Abstract: This paper presents the results of a three year research project at Cranfield University which investigated the integration of ecodesign within the early stages of product development. Previous research has shown that in order for ecodesign to be successful it must be introduced in the early concept stages of product development, however, much of the current research focuses much more on the later detail stages. A model is developed and presented which helps to illustrate the way in which this integration should take place. The paper concludes by showing how ecodesign integration at the early stages must differ from integration at the later stages if it is to be successful.
