Abstract: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) frequently transfer viruses and worms and, due to the sheer volume of traffic, makes networks unusable. In addition, these applications are typically used illegally to transfer copyrighted materials. This paper provides an overview of the technical background related to P2P usage in universities. Further, a review of the responses already made by universities to Illegal P2P File Sharing (IP2PFS) will be set forth. This knowledge should alert academic and business users that the |I| in IP2PFS means illegal and that there is an array of technical solutions available to prevent the illegal sharing of files.
