Title: Do communication and coopetition matter? A study on the effects of mobile features on collaborative learning

Abstract: Although a considerable number of mobile-computer-supported collaborative learning (mCSCL) studies exist, most of them have been conducted on short experimental intervention and small sample sizes, and little attention has been paid to the wider influence of mobility features. Therefore, this paper emphasises how two mobile-enabled features, communication and coopetition, affect the learning outcomes for in-class learning. Through a non-equivalent quasi-experimental approach, this study empirically discovered that the students in mCSCL contexts significantly outperformed those in face-to-face collaborative learning (CL) contexts in terms of examination scores; however, no significant difference was found between the groups regarding perceived learning satisfaction. The empirical results also indicate that students using coopetition mechanisms exhibited greater performance in the basic examination compared to those merely using tablets; however, the reverse performance pattern was found in the advanced examination.
