Abstract: Software testing is a critical component in the shifting paradigms of software development because of the changing nature of technology and the increasing complexity of real time changes impacting in this area. Still the area is very less researched and the impacts have been less analysed statistically. In practice, cost and quality are the two important items apart from the on time delivery. Centralisation and partial centralisation of testing units in the organisations is one such area where organisations always struggle to see the impact. Knowledge management is another area where the changes are explicit but never well researched. This study tries to fill that gap where the impact of the centralisation of testing unit and the knowledge management process on production defect and cost of testing is analysed on the basis of statistical model. The survey conducted with practitioners gives us the reliable data points to conclude that these variables positively impact the researched topics however their impacts vary in terms of their significance. It is sincerely hoped that this research will give a stage for further researches happening in the area of software testing and its centralisation in an organisation.

Keywords: testing unit; knowledge management; production defect; software testing; cost of testing.
