Abstract: The performance appraisal system of the Indian civil servants is undergoing tremendous changes. Since the transition in the performance appraisal of Indian civil servants is underway, this case provides a live experience of the shortcoming of the type of system obtained in the past and at present. It also illustrates the expectations from the future system. Dealing with a transition which is underway, the case helps in better appreciation of the organisation and individual level impediments faced in changing over to a ideal performance appraisal system. Indian civil services being a huge manpower resource, the understanding of change required due to a changing performance system has unique learning to offer.
