Abstract: The term downtime is used to refer periods when a system is unavailable for use. Downtime or outage duration refers to a period of time that a system fails to provide or perform its primary function. The AIIMS is having fully functional HIS and EMR system. The key areas were identified where server downtime is unacceptable, so that the efficiency of the hospital and patient services can be maintained. There are three methods: 1) paper-based system; 2) semi-automated HIS in parts; 3) fully automated HIS in parts. Finally, the best method for HIS server downtime was established. A refocus on decreasing downtime of HIS server and ways to decrease the effect of server downtime are required. The best method concluded is fully automated HIS in parts. With this system the data generated during HIS downtime can be effectively and efficiently loaded on the HIS server, once the HIS server is in service.
