Abstract: The issues of information security, such as data encryption and privacy protection have affected the development of internet of things (IoT). This makes a new claim to the design of encryption algorithms. Lightweight encryption algorithms are designed with the features of relatively short key length and simple algorithm structure, providing security for resource constrained devices. Lightweight encryption algorithms are seeking for the best balance between efficiency and security in the design phase. Thus, it is particularly important to analyse the optimisation of the algorithm implementation, performance evaluation and security analysis. The performance evaluation and analysis are conducted in this paper on some representative lightweight encryption algorithms in terms of computational efficiency and memory usage. This paper also provides not only valuable performance evaluation results of the lightweight encryption algorithms, but also the methodology for the performance evaluation of lightweight encryption algorithms.

Keywords: information security; lightweight encryption algorithms; simulation; performance analysis; performance evaluation; internet of things; IoT; cryptography; privacy protection; privacy preservation.
