Abstract: Instantaneous communication is the need of the hour. Wireless networks enable instantaneous communication. Since the application interacts with the transport protocol, the services of a transport protocol are of significant importance. All the traditional applications use TCP as the transport protocol. TCP congestion control mechanisms are essential for the stability of the internet. The overhead associated with TCP are making the multimedia applications use UDP, which can lead to instability of the internet. TFRC is the intermediate solution which has TCP congestion control mechanisms but avoids TCP overhead. All the three transport protocols will continue to be used by different applications. In this paper, performance of TCP, UDP and TFRC is evaluated. Interoperation of the protocols is also studied. The purpose is to identify the limitations of the three transport protocols in static wireless ad hoc networks and understanding the scope for improvement. Ns-2.35 is used as simulator.
