Abstract: This paper proposed an improved semi-empirical single diode photovoltaic (PV) module model over single-diode five parameter (Rp) model. Rp-model is considered as a compromise in simplicity and accuracy among other models, however, it has drawbacks on deviation from actual value at low irradiance level. The proposed semi-empirical Rp-model (SE-Rp) is to improve the drawback by considering the simplicity and accuracy features of Rp-model. Model verification has been done for six different PV modules of three common manufacturing technologies: mono-crystalline, poly/multi-crystalline and thin-film silicon. I-V characteristic and absolute error plots revealed significant improvements of the proposed model over Rp-model.
