Abstract: This paper is an in-depth case study of the origins, development and growth of a major innovation: wireless charging of mobile phones by two new ventures, PowerKiss and Powermat (2007-2014). PowerKiss was created by a Finnish woman entrepreneur, Powermat by an Israeli venture capitalist, who acquired PowerKiss in 2013. In summer 2014 there were approximately 3,500 wireless charging installations in airports cafés and lounges, McDonald's and Starbucks. The key factors for success are analysed and a forecast is made of the future of wireless charging of mobile phones, pads, portable computers, etc.
