Abstract: In this paper, we study the dynamical behaviours of the gas in a tube which is set into motion by a piston at one end in any spacetime path. All the analytic reasoning and calculations rely on the method of characteristics, the theory of asymptotic analysis and the theorem of implicit function. The obtained results are important in application, for example, the piston may be a blunt object moving into or removing out a gas in aerodynamics, the piston may represent the fluid on one side of a valve after it is opened, and the piston may denote a detonator in an explosion process.

Keywords: piston movement; characteristic method; asymptotic analysis; dynamic behaviour; gas flow; implicit function; aerodynamics; valve opening; detonator; explosion process.
