Abstract: Lip features are the most important facial features, which are being extensively used in various computer vision applications. Most of these applications like computer lip reading, lip biometrics, emotion recognition and language identification are real time applications and need robust and accurate design of lip-based recognition/classification systems. Design of such systems requires careful attention to two important issues: lip feature extraction techniques and classification methods. The motive of this review is to summarise and compare the various techniques, which have been adopted in state-of-the-art research papers to solve these issues along with related concerns. In addition, we discuss popular databases used for various lip-based applications along with performance evaluation parameters for comparison of various algorithms. This review will provide an impetus for various lip feature-based applications and new research topics, which will increase productivity in this exciting and challenging field.
