Abstract: In this study the authors propose new hybrid solar systems which involve cooling systems based on an adsorption chiller as well as photovoltaic (PV) cells. This study describes the applicability of an adsorption/desorption process to cool a PV panel in order to maintain low temperatures to generate electric power with a high efficiency. When solar heat transfers to the adsorber/desorber which is attached to the rear of a PV panel, the refrigerant desorbes from the adsorbent and takes heat from the PV panel. The authors formulate the desorbing process and evaluate the effects of cooling based on numerical simulations and experiments. Simulation results show significant effect on reducing the temperature increase of the PV panel. Experimental results also indicate the possibility of cooling the PV panel.
