Abstract: A questionnaire-based survey (n = 463) was conducted in NW Greece on secondary school teachers for their views on principals' duties, activities and skills. Teachers asked more input from their principal towards the creation of a work climate that promotes teamwork, empowerment and enhanced principal's role on mentoring and collaboration with the local community. Teachers also expressed the need for changes of the current selection system as well as the principals' job description. The majority of the respondents expressed the belief that there are 'no adequate motives for attracting qualified and competent candidates for leadership roles' in Greece.
